  1. Hans van Briemen of Mobile Excellence B.V. is the copyright owner and creative mind behind Sudoku-Ball. He is a very creative mathematician and Marketing professor at the University of Applied Science in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Marcel Lennartz of Lensoft International Ltd is the project director/producer of Sudoku-Ball and makes Hans's ideas into reality.

DownloadJava3d recently chatted with Marcel, and we learned about their game, the development process, and the development team behind Sudoku-Ball.

Our interview with Marcel Lennartz starts here...

  2. dlj3d: Everyone has heard of Sudoku, but what is Sudoku-Ball?
  3. A Sudoku-Ball
  4. Marcel: Sudoku-Ball is an unique version of the Sudoku puzzle. The unique challenge is to solve a 14 Samurai Sudoku network on a spherical object such that the entire network is closed in all directions.
Sudoku-Ball is powered by Java 3D.
  5. dlj3d: Where did the idea for Sudoku-Ball come from?
  6. Marcel: The idea of the game is a result of a series of events. In 2005 we developed and launched an i-mode Sudoku game. This was actually the first mobile Sudoku available on the market. Hereafter Hans van Briemen came with the idea that it should be possible to make Sudoku more fun and challenging by developing a new version of the Samurai Sudoku.

  8. The normal Samurai Sudoku isn’t much more than a few Sudoku’s linked together so we decided to close the gap and make a design which would link all Sudokus together in a closed 3D network. We started with a 6 Sudoku cube and extended via 9,12 to a 14 Sudoku sphere. The ball grid is a result of combining mathematics with art design, which makes it a unique creation that has already fascinated mathematicians as well as industrial designers.
